My earlier 'Disruptive Essay' certainly stirred some interest.

Comments included “totally irrelevant” all the way through to ”I’ve got it… the competition better look out!”

So, to help the naysayer doubters and also the believers I thought I should flesh out some of the debate with some more debate.

One or two caveats:

  • Christensen came from an academic startpoint so some of his work can be a little theoretical or big industry focused – however it is still worth looking at
  • Christensen’s original concept was about disruptive technologies: I am more interested in expanding the concept to what could be called ‘disruptive marketing’
  • I am interested in ‘disruptiveness’ (= challenger behaviour) rather than painstakingly applying Christensen’s model (= an absolute paradigm) to marketing
  • Finally, looking at the model is only worth what you get out of it and apply to your business
